EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the heartwarming moment of a Cape fur seal pup calling out for its mother, who is away hunting at sea. The adorable pup, known as C013 / 6154, belongs to the species Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus and can be found in coastal regions around southern and south-western Africa. These seals form large colonies and are an integral part of the diverse fauna that inhabits this area. At birth, this little pup weighs between 4.5 and 7 kilograms and measures about 60 to 70 centimeters long. It relies solely on its mother's milk for nourishment during the first six months of life before it learns to swim and catch its own food. Within three to five months after birth, its black pelt will be replaced by a grey one. The adults of this species primarily feed on fish and shellfish, showcasing their remarkable adaptability in marine biology. This particular photograph was taken along the rocky coast of South Africa's Northern Cape region, where these precious creatures find solace amidst stony surroundings. As we observe this single seal pup bleating for its mother's return, we witness the instinctive bond between them—a testament to maternal care in nature. Let us cherish such moments captured by talented photographers like Peter Chadwick from Science Photo Library as they remind us of our responsibility towards protecting wildlife habitats worldwide.
