Bruno Pontecorvo, Italian physicist

Bruno Pontecorvo (1913-1993), Italian physicist. Pontecorvo studied at the University of Rome, working with Enrico Fermi. He was working in France when World War II broke out. He fled to Spain and then the USA. He then worked in Canada and the UK before, in 1950, voluntarily defecting to the USSR. He worked in what is now called the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, in Dubna, near Moscow. He worked on particle physics, especially neutrinos and muons. The Pontecorvo Prize in particle physics is named for him. The subsequent experimental development (by others) of several of Pontecorvos ideas have led to the award of at least three Nobel Prizes. Photographed in 1964, in Russia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the brilliant mind of Bruno Pontecorvo, an esteemed Italian physicist whose contributions to particle physics shaped the course of scientific history. Born in 1913, Pontecorvo embarked on a remarkable journey that spanned continents and ideologies. Studying under the tutelage of Enrico Fermi at the University of Rome, Pontecorvo's early years were marked by intellectual curiosity and determination. However, as World War II erupted, he found himself caught in its chaotic grip. Fleeing first to Spain and then to the United States, Pontecorvo sought refuge from the turmoil that engulfed Europe. His quest for knowledge led him further afield as he ventured to Canada and eventually settled in the United Kingdom. But it was his voluntary defection to the Soviet Union in 1950 that would define his legacy. Joining what is now known as the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research near Moscow, Pontecorvo delved into groundbreaking research on neutrinos and muons. The impact of his work reverberated throughout scientific circles worldwide, earning him prestigious accolades such as having a prize named after him - The Pontecorvo Prize in particle physics - while also inspiring future Nobel laureates who built upon his ideas. In this evocative photograph taken in 1964 during his time in Russia, we catch a glimpse of Bruno Pontecorvo's enigmatic presence. His piercing gaze reflects both intellect and resilience – qualities that propelled him forward despite personal sacrifices made along his extraordinary path through history's annals of science.
