Brain activity white matter fibres C016 / 6295

White matter fibres overlaid a human head x-ray. Coloured 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI) scan of the bundles of white matter nerve fibres in the brain. The fibres transmit nerve signals between brain regions and between the brain and the spinal cord. Diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) is a variant of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in which a magnetic field maps the water contained in neuron fibers, thus mapping their criss-crossing patterns. A similar technique called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is also used to explore neural data of white matter fibres in the brain. Both methods allow mapping of their orientations and the connections between brain regions. Data/software: NIH Human Connectome Project /humanconnectomeproject.org)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate network of white matter fibres in the human brain, overlaid on an x-ray image of a human head. The vibrant colors represent a 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI) scan, which allows for detailed visualization of the bundles of nerve fibres responsible for transmitting signals between different regions of the brain and even to the spinal cord. Utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), DSI maps the water contained within these neuron fibers, enabling researchers to uncover their complex criss-crossing patterns. This technique is part of ongoing research conducted by the NIH Human Connectome Project, aimed at understanding how neural connections contribute to various cognitive functions. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), another method employed in exploring white matter fibres in the brain, also helps map their orientations and connections between different areas. Both DTI and DSI provide invaluable insights into our neural pathways and offer a deeper understanding of how information flows throughout this remarkable organ. The significance of this image lies not only in its aesthetic appeal but also in its contribution to advancing neuroscience. By unraveling these intricate networks through advanced imaging techniques, scientists are gaining valuable knowledge about how our brains function and communicate with other parts of our body.
