Alfred Velpeau (1795-18)
Alfred Velpeau was a French anatomist and surgeon who, though of humble origins, became the leading surgeon in Paris. He was admired and respected as a teacher in the university where he was professor of clinical surgery. He gained much of his knowledge of surgical anatomy as a student and assistant to Pierre Bretonneau, the eminent physician which included taking part in clandestine body snatching from cemeteries. He published over 340 titles on obstetrics, surgical anatomy, embryology, and operative medicine, many of which were translated into English. He also provided the first description of leukaemia. However he considered the use of anaesthetics as absurd and declared that "avoiding pain is a chimera" and "sharp instruments and pain during surgery are two things that will always be linked" and he disagreed with Charles Darwin's theory of evolution

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed Alfred Velpeau, a renowned French anatomist and surgeon whose humble beginnings did not hinder his rise to becoming Paris' leading surgeon. As a professor of clinical surgery at the university, he was highly regarded for his exceptional teaching skills. Velpeau's extensive knowledge of surgical anatomy stemmed from his time as a student and assistant to Pierre Bretonneau, an eminent physician known for engaging in clandestine body snatching activities. With over 340 published works on various medical subjects such as obstetrics, surgical anatomy, embryology, and operative medicine – many of which were translated into English – Velpeau left an indelible mark on the field. Notably, he provided the first description of leukemia, showcasing his pioneering contributions to medical science. Despite his remarkable achievements, it is intriguing to note that Velpeau held contrasting views on certain aspects. He vehemently opposed the use of anesthesia during surgeries and considered pain avoidance as nothing more than an illusion. In addition to this unconventional stance on pain management in surgery, he also disagreed with Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. This extraordinary print captures both the brilliance and complexity surrounding Alfred Velpeau's life and career—a testament to his lasting impact on surgical practices and medical education worldwide.
