Originally established in 1899 as Horton Asylum, London's seventh county asylum, the site provided care for individuals with mental health conditions and those in poverty, often housing both workhouse and asylum residents. During the First World War, Horton Asylum was repurposed as a military hospital, treating wounded soldiers from the battlefields of Europe. Following the war, it was renamed Horton Mental Hospital. Once again, during the Second World War from 1939 to 1949, the hospital served as a war hospital, providing essential medical care to military personnel.
