Cricket at The Oval c1855

A cricket match taking place at The Oval cricket ground in Kennington, London. The Oval is the home of Surrey County Cricket Club and was the first ground in England to host a test match in 1880. The ground was a market garden until the club was able to persuade the owner (the Duchy of Cornwall) to allow them to change its use to a cricket ground. From The Boy's Own Paper 1879-80, a British newspaper for boys which was at that time published by the Religious Tract Society and which featured stories, heroic deeds, facts, educational items and illustrations

LCC-LFB Pageants Wharf fire station, Rotherhithe

Built by the London County Council and opened in 1903, Pageants Wharf fire station still stands at 241 Rotherhithe Street, SE16. With the decline of the Surrey Docks system and removal of the swing bridges at either end of Rotherhithe Street (replaced by permanent access) the station was closed in 1968
