Thymus gland tissue, light micrograph
Thymus gland tissue. Light micrograph of a transverse section through tissue from the thymus gland, part of the lymphoid system. The black areas are the thymic cortex, which produces lots of lymphocytes. The grey areas, the thymic medulla, produce less lymphocytes. In-between are blood vessels (pink). This gland is located in the throat. Its role is to produce and mature T-lymphocytes (a specialised form of white blood cell), as well as other, more basic lymphocytes. It also controls the development of lymph nodes and the spleen. Magnification: x2 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a light micrograph of thymus gland tissue, providing a fascinating glimpse into the intricate workings of our lymphoid system. The image depicts a transverse section through the tissue, revealing distinct black areas known as the thymic cortex. These regions are responsible for producing an abundance of lymphocytes, specialized white blood cells crucial to our immune system. Contrasting with the dark cortex, grey areas representing the thymic medulla can be observed in between. These sections produce fewer lymphocytes but play an equally important role in maintaining our overall health and well-being. Prominently featured amidst this cellular landscape are delicate pink blood vessels that traverse through the tissue. Located within the throat region, the thymus gland serves as a vital hub for T-lymphocyte production and maturation. Additionally, it exerts control over the development of other essential components of our immune system such as lymph nodes and spleen. With its exceptional magnification capabilities allowing for detailed observation at 10 centimeters wide when printed, this print offers an enlightening insight into human anatomy and biology. Its white background enhances focus on each element present within this histological masterpiece. Perfect for those fascinated by immunology or seeking to deepen their understanding of endocrinology and the lymphatic system, this visually stunning print from Science Photo Library is sure to captivate both scientists and enthusiasts alike.
