EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intimate bond between a mantled guereza mother and her baby, perched high up in a wild fig tree. Also known as the eastern black-and-white colobus, this monkey species can be found in west central and east Africa. Living in troops consisting of one adult male and several females, they rely on fruits, flowers, and seeds for sustenance. With a body length of approximately 60 centimeters, these herbivores are an essential part of their ecosystem. In this heartwarming image captured in Ethiopia, we witness the nurturing nature of these primates. The newborn baby is securely held by its mother as they navigate through the branches. It is common for mantled guerezas to carry their infants during their early months of life. The arboreal habitat provided by the fig tree serves as a safe haven for this biological duo to thrive. This photograph not only highlights the beauty of African wildlife but also sheds light on important aspects of reproduction and parenting within primate communities. Brian Gadsby's skillful photography from Science Photo Library allows us to appreciate the intricate dynamics present in nature while reminding us that there is much more to learn about our fellow inhabitants on this planet.
