Andrei Tupolev, Soviet aircraft designer C013 / 9139
Andrei Tupolev (1888-1972). Portrait of the Soviet aircraft designer, Andrei Nikolayevich Tupolev, standing in front of a Tu-144 airliner in Moscow, Russia. Tupolev pioneered aircraft design in the Soviet Union, overseeing the development of more than 100 models of aircraft. These included the Tu-144 (NATO reporting name Charger ), the worlds first supersonic jet airliner. The peak of prestige attained by Tupolevs design bureau was in the late 1950s and early 1960s, when Kruschev was Soviet Premier, but after Kruschev was removed in 1964, the ageing Tupolev started to lose his political influence and by 1973 had been eclipsed by rivals such as Ilyushin. Photographed at Sheremetyevo Airport, Moscow, Russia, in 1968

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the legendary Soviet aircraft designer, Andrei Nikolayevich Tupolev, standing proudly in front of a Tu-144 airliner at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow, Russia. Andrei Tupolev was an influential figure in the aerospace industry during the twentieth century, pioneering aircraft design and overseeing the development of over 100 models of aircraft. One of his most notable achievements was the creation of the Tu-144, also known as "Charger" which became the world's first supersonic jet airliner. This groundbreaking feat propelled Tupolev's design bureau to its peak prestige during the late 1950s and early 1960s when Kruschev held power as Soviet Premier. However, after Kruschev's removal from office in 1964, Tupolev started experiencing a decline in political influence. By 1973, he had been overshadowed by rival designers such as Ilyushin. Nevertheless, this photograph immortalizes him at a time when his contributions to aviation were still highly regarded. The image showcases not only Tupolev himself but also provides a glimpse into Moscow's bustling Sheremetyevo Airport in 1968. The monochrome aesthetic adds an air of nostalgia and historical significance to this remarkable moment captured on film. Andrei Tupolev will forever be remembered for his significant role in shaping Russian aviation history through his innovative designs and unwavering dedication to pushing boundaries within aeronautical engineering.
