Taken from painting by Francis Barraud of his brother's dog, Nipper, listening to recording of his dead master on cylinder phonograph. Bought by The Gramophone Company and used as publicity from 1900. Image later modified and simplified to reflect The Gramophone Company's machines

Wisteria

Watercolour on board of a scene in the gardens at Dyffryn House, South Wales by Edith Helena Adie. Adie was born in London and studied at the Slade School of Art and the Royal Academy. She was a member of the New Watercolour Society specialising in landscapes and garden views. Adie also lived and painted in Bordighera, Italy. Her paintings of the gardens at Dyffryn House designed by Thomas Mawson in 1906, were commissioned by the owner Reginald Cory (1871-1934) a passionate gardener and benefactor to horticultural causes. This painting is dated as finished 30th May 1923

Early electronic valve, diagram

Audion amplifier. Diagram of an Audion triode valve that was the first amplifier. It was invented by Lee De Forest in 1907. De Forest worked on vacuum tubes, which act as diodes (devices that allow electricity to flow one way only). The addition of a grid (yellow) allowed the amplification of weak radio signals (top), which made radio a practical method of transmitting information
