Framed Photos from Royal Cornwall Museum
Cassiterite, Ulu Johan, Ipoh, Kinta district, Southern Perak, Malaysia
This large specimen of water worn cassiterite was brought to Cornwall from Malaysia by Redruth businessman James Wickett in 1910. In Cornwall, cassiterite is concentrated in hydrothermal veins and pegmatites associated with granite intrusions. Cassiterite is the primary ore of tin, the most significant metal mined in Cornwall. In the late 1920s, cheaper tin from Malaysia undercut the price of Cornish tin, contributing to the industrys decline, and causing many miners to emigrate in search of work. Wickett Collection

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable specimen of cassiterite, discovered in Ulu Johan, Ipoh, located in the Kinta district of Southern Perak, Malaysia. Transported to Cornwall in 1910 by James Wickett, a prominent Redruth businessman, this large water-worn cassiterite exemplifies the geological diversity found within the region. In Cornwall, cassiterite is predominantly concentrated within hydrothermal veins and pegmatites associated with granite intrusions. As the primary ore of tin - one of Cornwall's most significant metals - cassiterite played a pivotal role in shaping the local mining industry. However, during the late 1920s, cheaper tin imports from Malaysia flooded the market and undercut Cornish prices significantly. This economic shift led to a decline in Cornwall's mining sector and prompted many miners to seek employment opportunities elsewhere. The Wickett Collection serves as a poignant reminder of this tumultuous period for Cornish miners. The contrasting shades of grey, yellow, white, and brown exhibited by this stunning mineral specimen highlight its unique beauty while symbolizing both prosperity and hardship intertwined within Cornwall's rich mining history. Andy Tindle expertly captures not only the physical attributes but also the historical significance behind this photograph. Through his lens, we are transported back to an era where minerals like cassiterite held immense value and shaped entire communities' destinies.
