EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored aquatint print of Caprimulgus vociferus, the Eastern Whip-poor-will, is Plate 82 from John James Audubon's iconic work, "Birds of America" (1827-30). The print was engraved, printed, and hand-colored by R. Havell & Son in London. The Eastern Whip-poor-will is a nocturnal bird belonging to the Caprimulgidae family, order Caprimulgiformes, and is known for its distinctive nighttime call that sounds like the repetition of the phrase "whip-poor-will." The bird is depicted perched on a branch of a Fagaceae tree, a family of angiosperms, specifically dicotyledonous flowering plants. In the background, various butterflies and other arthropods, including caterpillars, can be seen among the leaves of the tree. The Eastern Whip-poor-will is shown with its distinctive long, downward-pointing bill and large, round eyes, which help it to locate its insect prey in the dark. The print is a masterpiece of natural history illustration, showcasing the intricate details of both the bird and its surroundings. The use of aquatint, a printing technique that allows for tonal gradations and shading, adds depth and texture to the image. The hand-coloring further enhances the print's beauty, bringing the vibrant colors of the butterflies and other arthropods to life. The Eastern Whip-poor-will is a member of the eudicot order, specifically the Eurosids, Fabales, and Caprimulgidae families. It is also known as a hexapod, as it belongs to the class Hexapoda, which includes all insects and arachnids. The print is a testament to Audubon's dedication to accurately recording the natural world and to the skill of the engravers, printers, and colorists who brought his vision to life.
