EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking portrait, Christian Friedrich Baron von Stockmar (1787-1863) is depicted with an air of wisdom and authority. Born in Saxony, Germany, von Stockmar rose to prominence as a physician before turning to politics. He served as a trusted advisor to two monarchs of significant European influence: Leopold I of Belgium and Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. Leopold I, the first king of the independent Belgian state, appointed von Stockmar as his prime minister in 1831, a position he held until 1848. During his tenure, von Stockmar played a pivotal role in shaping Belgian politics and society. He advocated for a constitutional monarchy, religious tolerance, and economic development. His efforts helped to establish a stable and prosperous Belgian state. After leaving Belgian politics, von Stockmar became a confidant to Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. He served as her private secretary from 1840 until his death in 1863. During this time, he advised the queen on matters of state and acted as a liaison between the British and Belgian courts. Von Stockmar's influence extended beyond his official roles. He was a prolific writer and published numerous works on politics, philosophy, and medicine. His ideas on constitutional government and the role of the monarchy in a modern state continue to be studied by scholars today. This photograph captures the essence of a remarkable man who left an indelible mark on European history. Von Stockmar's legacy as a statesman, physician, and advisor to two monarchs is a testament to his intelligence, wisdom, and dedication to public service.
