EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a powerful scene from Dante Alighieri's epic poem, "The Divine Comedy". Illustrated by Gustave Dore in the late 19th century, this image depicts Dante and the Roman poet Virgil walking on a frozen lake. As they traverse the icy surface, sinners guilty of treachery are trapped within the unforgiving ice. Dante's journey through Hell serves as an allegory for human suffering and redemption. In this particular circle known as Cocytus, traitors endure their punishment for eternity. The frozen lake symbolizes their cold hearts and betrayal towards others. The composition beautifully portrays both the desolation and torment experienced by these condemned souls. The intricate details in Dore's engraving bring to life their anguish and despair. As we gaze upon this haunting image, it reminds us to be mindful of our actions towards others. We must take care not to trample upon those less fortunate than ourselves or betray our fellow human beings. "The Divine Comedy" continues to resonate with readers across centuries due to its profound exploration of morality, spirituality, and human nature. This edition with Gustave Dore's illustrations is a testament to the enduring power of Dante Alighieri's masterpiece. Let us reflect upon this thought-provoking artwork that serves as a reminder to treat our brethren with kindness and compassion in all walks of life.
