German Renaissance metalwork, (1898). Creator: Unknown

German Renaissance metalwork, (1898). Figs 1-6: Representations of armour from the Kabinet der Handzeichnungen alter Meister at Munich...Many weapons and armours, the surfaces of which are, with marvellous ingenuity and endless variety, decorated with scroll-work, frame-work and strap-work, were...for a long time believed to be works of the greatest Italian masters, who were thought to have made them chiefly at the French court. Some years ago, however, the surprising discovery was made, that the most and very finest of these objects were of German origin, German masters, above all, having been called by Francis I and Henry II [16th century] for that purpose to France. Part of these harnesses, shields, helms etc. are most splendidly decorated with complete figural representations, others with single figures, animals, birds, mythical beings as well as with flowers and scroll-work...The metal-plates were either etched, chased or damascened, more frequently however the designs were raised by embossment. Plate 71 from " The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from the German of H. Dolmetsch. [B.T. Batford, London, 1898]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of German Renaissance metalwork, dating back to 1898. The unknown creator skillfully captured the intricate details and craftsmanship of armor from the Kabinet der Handzeichnungen alter Meister at Munich. The artwork on these weapons and armors is a testament to the remarkable ingenuity and endless creativity of German masters. For many years, these pieces were mistakenly attributed to Italian artists who were believed to have created them primarily for the French court. However, a surprising revelation occurred when it was discovered that the most exceptional examples originated from Germany. These stunning objects feature an array of decorative elements including scroll-work, frame-work, strap-work, as well as figural representations, animals, birds, mythical beings, flowers, and scroll-work. The metal-plates themselves were meticulously etched or chased with designs raised by embossment or damascened. Plate 71 from "The Historic Styles of Ornament" translated from H. Dolmetsch's original German text in 1898 provides us with a glimpse into this extraordinary art form. This print serves as a visual reminder of the rich history and cultural significance behind these masterpieces. As we admire this image today, let us appreciate not only the technical prowess displayed but also recognize how it sheds light on an often overlooked chapter in art history - one where German craftsmen played a vital role in shaping Renaissance metalwork aesthetics.
