EDITORS COMMENTS

Bishop of London in 1550, Ridley was not only an English Protestant reformer but also a devout Christian who faced persecution for his beliefs. The image shows Ridley writing while imprisoned, highlighting his unwavering commitment to the Anglican faith during a tumultuous time. Under the reign of Queen Mary I, he was unjustly found guilty of heresy and sentenced to a gruesome punishment. On that fateful day - October 16,1555 - Nicholas Ridley was taken from London to Oxford where he met his tragic fate. Alongside fellow reformers Latimer and Cranmer, he was burned alive in front of Balliol College as punishment for challenging Roman Catholic doctrine. Ridley's martyrdom serves as a poignant reminder of the religious turmoil that engulfed Britain during this era. His courageous stand against persecution has made him an enduring symbol of religious freedom and resistance against oppression. This historical print preserves the memory and sacrifice of Nicholas Ridley within its intricate details and vibrant colors. It serves as both a testament to his unwavering faith and a tribute to all those who have fought for their beliefs throughout history.
