Salt crystal, light micrograph
Salt. Polarised light micrograph of a crystal of sodium chloride, the common salt. This is a white crystalline compound widespread in nature as a solid (rock salt), around margins of salt lakes and in solution (about 3%) in seawater. Other metals are present in the raw material such as calcium, iron and magnesium. These are often removed by precipitation before the salt is sold. Salt is used as a food seasoning and preservative, and as a raw material in industrial processes such as in glass and soap making. Vertical object-size: 1.5mm

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a salt crystal, as captured under polarised light microscopy. The crystal, composed of sodium chloride, commonly known as table salt, appears in its purest form with a white crystalline structure. While this compound is widely found in nature as rock salt and within seawater, it undergoes various processes to remove impurities such as calcium, iron, and magnesium before being sold. Salt serves multiple purposes beyond its role as a food seasoning and preservative. It plays a crucial part in industrial processes like glassmaking and soap production. This microscopic image highlights the vertical object-size of 1.5mm, allowing us to appreciate the remarkable details that are often unseen by the naked eye. Alfred Pasieka's skillful photography brings forth an extraordinary magnified view of this common yet essential substance. His expertise in capturing scientific subjects shines through once again with this mesmerizing shot from Science Photo Library.
