Damp-proofing in a house

Damp-proofing in a house. Impermeable layer of tar-like material (diagonal black line) inserted in the bedding joint between two courses of brickwork in the wall of a house. This layer is known as a damp-proof membrane (DPM), or damp-proof course (DPC). DPMs prevent moisture from the ground rising through the brickwork causing dampness (rising damp) and damage to the wall above. Evidence of rising damp is visible in the two courses below the DPM. This can be seen as moss is growing on the wall and the mortar is coming away between the bricks

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the importance of damp-proofing in a house. The image captures an impermeable layer of tar-like material, known as a damp-proof membrane (DPM) or damp-proof course (DPC), inserted between two courses of brickwork on a wall. This crucial layer acts as a barrier, preventing moisture from the ground rising through the brickwork and causing damage to the wall above. The evidence of rising damp is clearly visible below the DPM, with moss growing on the wall and mortar coming away between the bricks. This serves as a stark reminder of what can happen without proper protection against moisture infiltration. With its combination of engineering expertise and architectural significance, this photo highlights how building technology has evolved to safeguard our homes. The use of bituminous materials like tar demonstrates both preventative measures and technological advancements in construction practices. By capturing this moment in time, Science Photo Library provides us with an educational glimpse into how essential it is to have effective damp-proofing systems in place for long-lasting structural integrity. Whether we are homeowners or professionals in architecture and construction fields, this image reminds us that protecting our buildings from rising damp is paramount for maintaining their beauty and functionality over time.
