Model of the ATLAS particle detector
Lego model of the ATLAS (a toroidal LHC apparatus) particle detector at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory). ATLAS sits around the large hadron collider (LHC) particle accelerator. ATLAS is a general-purpose detector designed to measure the broadest possible range of particles and physical processes that could result from the collision of the proton beams within the LHC.

Damp-proofing in a house
Damp-proofing in a house. Impermeable layer of tar-like material (diagonal black line) inserted in the bedding joint between two courses of brickwork in the wall of a house. This layer is known as a damp-proof membrane (DPM), or damp-proof course (DPC). DPMs prevent moisture from the ground rising through the brickwork causing dampness (rising damp) and damage to the wall above. Evidence of rising damp is visible in the two courses below the DPM. This can be seen as moss is growing on the wall and the mortar is coming away between the bricks.
