Celestial planispheres, 1772 C016 / 4386

Celestial planispheres. 18th-century astronomy diagrams centred around planispheres of stars and constellations. The northern celestial hemisphere is at left, with the southern celestial hemisphere at right, separated by a scale of star magnitudes. The Copernican heliocentric system (bottom centre) replaced the Ptolemaic geocentric system (top centre). In the corners are the Tychonic system (top left), the lunar phases (bottom left), the motion of the Earth around the Sun (bottom right), and the lunar tides (top right). This page is from Planisphaerium coeleste (1772) by the German cartographer Tobias Conrad Lotter (1717-1777)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of astronomical history. Entitled "Celestial planispheres, 1772" the image features a collection of 18th-century astronomy diagrams centered around planispheres of stars and constellations. The composition is divided into two halves, with the northern celestial hemisphere on the left and the southern celestial hemisphere on the right. The diagram provides a fascinating glimpse into different cosmological systems prevalent during that era. At the top center, we see the Ptolemaic geocentric system being replaced by the Copernican heliocentric system at bottom center – an important shift in understanding our place in the universe. In each corner, additional elements are depicted: Tychonic system (top left), lunar phases (bottom left), motion of Earth around Sun (bottom right), and lunar tides (top right). This page is extracted from Tobias Conrad Lotter's renowned publication "Planisphaerium coeleste" published in 1772. Lotter was a German cartographer known for his exceptional work in mapping various aspects of geography and astronomy. With its intricate details and labeled components, this artwork serves as both an educational tool and a testament to human curiosity about our cosmic surroundings. It reminds us of how far we have come in unraveling the mysteries of our solar system while honoring those who paved the way for modern astronomical knowledge.
