EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the moment of arrest for William Franklin, the loyalist Governor of New Jersey during the American Revolution. Born in 1731, William was the illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of America. Despite his esteemed lineage, William's political allegiances lay with the British crown. In June 1776, as the tide of the war turned against the British, William's support for the king became a liability. The rebels, determined to assert their independence, arrested William in Jersey. The exact location of this arrest is unknown, but it likely took place in the provincial capital, New Brunswick. The photograph, taken from an original print by Mary Evans Picture Library, depicts William being led away in handcuffs by a group of armed rebels. His expression is one of resignation, as he accepts his fate. Despite the dramatic nature of the scene, William's arrest was not the end of his story. He was eventually exchanged for American prisoners of war and spent the remainder of his days in England. William's loyalty to the British crown put him at odds with his famous father, who had long advocated for American independence. This arrest marked a significant turning point in the American Revolution, as it highlighted the growing divide between those who supported the British and those who sought independence. This historical photograph is a poignant reminder of the complexities of the American Revolution and the personal sacrifices that came with the pursuit of independence. William Franklin's story serves as a reminder that even within families, political allegiances could be divisive, and that the path to independence was not an easy one.
