Hoccleve, a pivotal figure in the intellectual and academic circles of late medieval England, is best known for his contributions to astronomy and the founding of the New Foundation at Queens College, Oxford. Born in London around 1368 or 1369, Hoccleve's early life is shrouded in mystery. However, we know that he rose to prominence as a scholar and author, penning works such as the "Series Regum Anglicarum" and the "Complaint unto God the Father." Hoccleve's literary prowess earned him the patronage of King Henry V, who appointed him as a clerk of the king's works in 1413. The astronomical aspect of Hoccleve's legacy is equally impressive. He was a skilled mathematician and astronomer, and his work on the motion of the planets and the calculation of the solar and lunar eclipses was groundbreaking for the time. In 1432, Hoccleve was granted a royal charter to establish the New Foundation at Queens College, Oxford. This foundation was designed to provide scholarships for students in need, ensuring that they could pursue their studies without financial hardship.
