This evocative image captures the intense political atmosphere of 14th century England, as King Richard II (r. 1377-1399) presides over an Appeal of Treason in November 1387. Surrounded by the aristocracy, including the Duke of Gloucester, the Earl of Arundel, and the Earl of Warwick, the monarch sits confidently on his ornately tiled throne, his regal crown atop his head. The duke and earls, holding a gauntlet and a glove respectively, have accused five of the king's favourites - Edward de Vere, Nicholas Brembre, and the Archbishop of York - of wrongdoing. The Appeal of Treason was a process used three times during Richard II's reign to address allegations of treason against his courtiers. This particular appeal marked the height of the conflict between the king and his powerful nobles, who saw the favourites as rivals and threats to their own influence. The gauntlet and glove were symbols of this conflict: the accuser would throw the gauntlet at the accused, challenging them to respond to the accusations.
