The Prince of Wales in a sailor suit
Prince Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, King Edward VII (1841-1910) dressed in a sailor suit, after a painting by Winterhalter. Painted in 1846 when Bertie was four years old, this popular picture marked a turning point in childrens fashion. He was given a scaled-down version of a sailors uniform worn by ratings on the Royal Yacht. He wore it during a cruise off the Channel Islands and delighted his mother and the public alike. Popular engravings spread the idea and by the 1870s the sailor suit became normal dress for boys all over the world - and often their sisters too. The original suit is preserved in the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich
