Miss Margaret Whigham and Mr Charles Sweeny at a party at the Embassy Club to celebrate their engagement in December 1932. Their wedding, at Brompton Oratory the following February attracted thousands of spectators and stopped traffic - she wore a dress designed by Norman Hartnell. They were to become the golden couple of society with Mrs Charles Sweeny even name-checked by Cole Porter in You re the Top. Margarets second marriage made her Duchess of Argyll but it ended in a scandalous divorce. Date: 1932

In this photograph from the 1930s, we find Margaret Whigham and Charles Sweeny, an enchanting couple whose engagement party at The Embassy Club in December 1932 marked the beginning of a society whirlwind romance. The image, taken during an elegant soiree, captures the young, radiant bride-to-be, Margaret, beaming with joy as she stands beside her dashing fiancé, Charles. The couple's engagement was a significant event, as their subsequent wedding at the Brompton Oratory in February 1933 attracted thousands of spectators and even halted traffic. The bride wore a stunning gown designed by the renowned British designer, Norman Hartnell. Margaret and Charles quickly became the golden couple of society, with Margaret, later known as Mrs. Charles Sweeny, even earning a mention in Cole Porter's iconic song "You're the Top."
