EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts Gertrude Anne of Hohenberg (1225-1281), the queen consort of King Rudolf I of Germany, and her son, Charles, who passed away in 1276. The image is derived from Gertrude's tomb in Basel Minster, a renowned church in Switzerland. The queen is shown wearing the regal attire of the 13th century, adorned in a long, flowing gown, a mantle, and a headdress adorned with a halo and the symbols of St. Catherine and St. Alexandria. Gertrude's attire also features a silver girdle, symbolizing her royal status. Gertrude's son, Charles, is depicted wearing the clothing of a young knight, including a helmet, cowl, and holding a hammer and pick, possibly signifying his association with mining and the mining industry. The presence of a sword with a halo above it may represent the divine protection granted to the royal family. The illustration was created by Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck (1811-1903), a German museum curator, archaeologist, art historian, illustrator, and etcher. Hefner-Alteneck's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate depiction of the queen's and prince's costumes, as well as the stained glass window in the background, which appears to be from Freiburg Minster. This beautiful and historically significant image offers a glimpse into the fashion, art, and culture of the Middle Ages, making it a valuable addition to any collection or research on the subject.
