EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Andrea Bernieri, from Giulio Ferrrario's "Costumes Antique and Modern of All Peoples" (Il Costume Antico e Moderno di Tutti i Popoli), published in Florence in 1842, provides a fascinating glimpse into the musical instruments of China during the early 19th century. The engraving features a variety of Chinese musical instruments, including three dagu drums (1, 2, 3), two sets of bianzhong bells (4, 7), two pairs of bells (5, 6), and two guzheng zithers (9, 10). The dagu drums, also known as "large drums," were traditionally used in military and ceremonial contexts. Each drum consists of a large, flat drumhead covered with animal hides, suspended over a deep, wide body. The drums were struck with large wooden mallets, producing a deep, resonant sound. The bianzhong bells were an essential component of Chinese orchestras during the Han and Tang dynasties. These bronze bells were cast in sets, with each set consisting of various sizes and tones. The bells were struck with wooden mallets or bamboo sticks, producing a bright, clear sound. The guzheng zither is a plucked stringed instrument that has been a staple of Chinese music for over two thousand years. The instrument consists of a long, flat body with strings stretched over a bridge. The player uses plectrums to pluck the strings, producing a mellow, melodic sound. This engraving offers a unique insight into the musical traditions of China during the 19th century, providing a glimpse into the diverse and rich cultural heritage of this ancient civilization. The intricate details of the instruments, captured through the art of handcoloured copperplate engraving, serve as a testament to the skill and artistry of Andrea Bernieri and Giulio Ferrrario.
