Lady Muriel Paget

Lady Muriel Paget (1876 - 1938), nee Finch-Hatton, wife of Sir Richard Surtees Paget, second Baronet of Oldfallings Hall, Wolverhampton. Lady Paget was a humanitarian relief worker, first establishing soup kitchens in the poor districts of London, becoming secretary of the Invalid Kitchens Fund. She then opened a kitchen catering for Belgian refugees in London at the start of the First World War. Her work then extended to Russia and Eastern Europe where she opened field and base hospitals, ambulances and worked indefatigably for the poor and needy both during and after the war - lobbying, training, recruiting social workers and nurses. In 1924 she organised the rescue and relief of stranded Britons in Russia called the British Subjects in Russia Relief Association. Lady Paget had five children, who were cared for by a nanny while their mother worked abroad almost continuously. Pictured here at the time she was about to visit Russia to organise a Red Cross hospital. Date: 1915

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Lady Muriel Paget, nee Finch-Hatton, is seen preparing for her journey to Russia to establish a Red Cross hospital during the First World War. Lady Paget, the second wife of Sir Richard Surtees Paget, second Baronet of Oldfallings Hall, Wolverhampton, was a dedicated humanitarian relief worker whose compassionate spirit and unwavering commitment to helping the less fortunate knew no bounds. Born into a prominent English family, Lady Paget's philanthropic endeavors began in the impoverished districts of London, where she established soup kitchens and became the secretary of the Invalid Kitchens Fund. Her humanitarian efforts continued as the First World War broke out, and she opened a kitchen in London to cater to Belgian refugees. As the war progressed, Lady Paget's work extended to Russia and Eastern Europe, where she opened field and base hospitals, ambulances, and worked tirelessly for the poor and needy both during and after the war. Her efforts included lobbying, training, and recruiting social workers and nurses. In 1924, Lady Paget organized the rescue and relief of stranded Britons in Russia through the British Subjects in Russia Relief Association. Despite having five children, Lady Paget's dedication to her humanitarian work meant that she was almost continuously absent from their care, which was entrusted to a nanny. This photograph captures Lady Paget in a moment of determination and focus as she prepares to embark on another mission to bring relief and hope to those in need. Her selfless actions and unwavering commitment to humanitarian work continue to inspire and remind us of the power of compassion and the importance of helping those in need.
