EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures a moment in time from the Ottoman era on the enchanting Island of Kos, located in the eastern Aegean Sea. Four kilometres off the coast of Southern Anatolia, opposite Bodrum, Kos was once a significant part of the Turkish region of Caria, ruled by the Ottomans for over 400 years. The island's rich history is evident in this photograph, taken during a time when Kos was under Ottoman rule. Four elegant women, dressed in traditional Ottoman attire, sit together, their faces reflecting a sense of joy and relaxation. The scene takes place in a tranquil setting, with the women seemingly enjoying a glass of wine, a beverage that was an integral part of Ottoman social life. The women's costumes, adorned with intricate patterns and vibrant colours, are a testament to the unique cultural heritage of the region. Kos, also known as Istankoy or Coo in various historical contexts, has a fascinating history. It was transferred to Italy in 1912, and during World War Two, it was taken over by Germany until 1945. The island then became a protectorate of the UK, who ceded it to Greece in 1947. Today, Kos is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world who seek to explore its historical sites and enjoy its natural beauty. One of the most renowned figures associated with Kos is Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, who lived there in the 5th century BC. This image serves as a reminder of the island's rich history and cultural significance, offering a glimpse into the past and the traditions that continue to thrive on this beautiful island.
