In this evocative photograph, taken circa 1910, a large crowd gathers in the bustling streets of Cairo, Egypt, as they prepare for the Holy Carpet Procession. The Holy Carpet, a significant relic in Islamic history, is being carried from Cairo to Mecca for blessing at the Kaaba, the holiest site in Islam. The Kaaba, an ancient cube-shaped building at the center of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, is the most revered site in Islam and the focus of the Islamic pilgrimage, known as the Hajj. The Holy Carpet, a beautiful and intricately woven piece of textile, is used to cover the Kaaba during the Hajj season. The procession of the Holy Carpet is a momentous occasion, filled with religious fervor and historical significance. The carpet is carefully carried on the shoulders of hundreds of men, making its way through the streets of Cairo and then on to Mecca.
