EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph illustration, titled "Giant Hyrax, Riesenklippdachs, Extinct Ancestor," is a stunning representation of an intriguing prehistoric creature. Depicted in rich detail, this extinct ancestor of the modern Rock or Cape Hyrax (Procavia capensis) is believed to have lived during the Miocene epoch, around 15 to 5 million years ago. The Giant Hyrax, or Riesenklippdachs, is an extinct member of the hyrax family, which is characterized by their stocky bodies, short limbs, and clawed feet. However, this ancient relative dwarfed its modern-day counterparts, with estimates suggesting it may have weighed up to 100 kilograms (220 pounds) and reached lengths of over a meter (3.3 feet). This illustration was created by the skilled German artist and book illustrator, Heinrich Harder, in 1916. Known for his landscapes and natural history illustrations, Harder's work was featured in various publications, including his seminal series "Tiere der Urwelt" or "Animals of the Prehistoric World." This particular illustration was published in Hamburg. The Giant Hyrax may have shared some similarities with its living relatives, such as its herbivorous diet and social behavior. However, its large size and potential adaptation to different environments make it a fascinating subject for study and speculation among paleontologists and natural history enthusiasts. This image serves as a reminder of the rich diversity of life that has existed throughout Earth's history and the ongoing discoveries that continue to shape our understanding of the natural world.
