EDITORS COMMENTS
In this haunting image from the Illustrated London News, we bear witness to the aftermath of the Croxton outrage, an infamous attack on unarmed British fishing trawlers in the North Sea during the early months of World War II. The image captures the sinking of the Croxton, a fishing boat that met its fate at the hands of German aircraft and submarines in January 1940. The Croxton and other fishing trawlers were navigating the treacherous waters of the North Sea, far from the battlefields of Europe, when they were suddenly and brutally targeted. In the diagram inset at the top right of the image, we can see the favored maneuver used by the Germans in this attack. The boats were surrounded, machine-gunned, and bombed relentlessly until they sank, taking the lives of innocent civilian fishermen with them. The Croxton outrage was just one of several such attacks on North Sea fishing trawlers during this period. In response, the British began to arm their fishing fleet, transforming these once peaceful vessels into armed defenders of the sea. The image serves as a stark reminder of the indiscriminate nature of war and the devastating impact it can have on civilian populations, even in the most unexpected of places. This poignant photograph, taken by renowned war photographer G.H. Davis, was published in a double-page spread in the Illustrated London News, providing a visual record of this tragic event for posterity. The image is a testament to the human cost of conflict and the resilience of those who endured it.
