EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant and timeless photograph, we find the eight bridesmaids who graced the wedding of Princess Helena of the United Kingdom to Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein on the 5th of July, 1866. The bridesmaids, all dressed in beautiful gowns, are pictured in a clockwise order starting from the top left. The first bridesmaid is Lady Mary Fitzwilliam, followed by Lady Laura Phipps. The third bridesmaid is Lady Alexandrina Murray, and the fourth is Lady Caroline Lennox. The fifth bridesmaid is Lady Margaret Scott, and the sixth is Lady Muriel Campbell. The seventh bridesmaid is Lady Albertha Hamilton, and the eighth and final bridesmaid is Lady Ernestine Edgecumbe. Princess Helena, the second daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, married Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein in a grand ceremony held at the Chapel Royal in St. James's Palace, London. The bridesmaids, all young and beautiful, added an air of excitement and joy to the occasion. Lady Mary Fitzwilliam was the eldest daughter of the 6th Earl Fitzwilliam, Lady Laura Phipps was the eldest daughter of the 7th Marquess of Normanby, Lady Alexandrina Murray was the eldest daughter of the 6th Earl of Dysart, Lady Caroline Lennox was the eldest daughter of the 5th Duke of Richmond and Gordon, Lady Margaret Scott was the eldest daughter of the 1st Baron Stowell, Lady Muriel Campbell was the eldest daughter of the 8th Duke of Argyll, Lady Albertha Hamilton was the eldest daughter of the 1st Earl of Abercorn, and Lady Ernestine Edgecumbe was the eldest daughter of the 1st Earl of Mount Edgcumbe. This photograph is a beautiful reminder of the grandeur and elegance of a royal wedding from the past, and the important role that bridesmaids play in the celebration of the union of two people in marriage.
