EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic Woolworths store in Weymouth, Dorset. The image showcases the store's impressive channelled faience facade and elongated upper floor windows, which add a touch of elegance to the bustling St Mary Street. Originally opened in 1923 as store number 139 for F W Woolworth and Co Ltd, this beloved establishment underwent significant expansions and redevelopments during the 1930s. An Art Deco facade was added, further enhancing its architectural charm. Over the years, generations of shoppers flocked to this cherished retail destination. However, like many other Woolworths stores across the country, it eventually closed its doors in 1999. Despite its closure, the premises continued to serve as a hub for various retailers such as Mountain Warehouse, Bonmarche, Yours, Burton and Dorothy Perkins. The photograph transports us back in time to an era when shopping streets were filled with people eagerly exploring what "Woolies" had to offer. Its white exterior stands out against the backdrop of a vibrant high street scene. Preserved by Historic England and captured by Nicholas Anthony John Philpot with meticulous attention to detail, this print is not just a visual delight but also serves as a testament to our ever-evolving commercial landscape throughout history.
