Wolseley motor launch, 1914. Creator: Kirk & Sons of Cowes
Wolseley motor launch, 1914. The Wolseley Motors company, a British motor vehicle manufacturer founded in early 1901 by Vickers, also built marine power-units for a variety of watercraft. At first engines for launches were made in partnership with the well-known manufacturers, the Teddington Launch Works, to supply the launches. Demand for marine engines grew and Wolseley also designed and manufactured engines for hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries and lifeboats. Many of the larger vessels were built by S. E. Saunders Ltd. at Cowes, Isle-of-Wight

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Wolseley motor launch, a remarkable creation by Kirk & Sons of Cowes in 1914. The Wolseley Motors company, known for its British motor vehicles, expanded its expertise to include marine power-units for various watercraft. Initially partnering with the renowned Teddington Launch Works, they supplied engines for launches. However, as demand grew, Wolseley ventured into designing and manufacturing engines for hydroplanes, cruisers, passenger ferries, and lifeboats. The photograph captures the elegance of this motor launch against the backdrop of fine weather on the enchanting Isle of Wight. S. E. Saunders Ltd. , based in Cowes on this picturesque island, constructed many larger vessels like this one. With its sleek hull design and powerful engine built by William Umpleby Kirk himself alongside his father Edgar WP Kirk at their esteemed workshop in Cowes; this boat exudes both beauty and functionality. Its starboard quarter view reveals a glimpse into an era when road transport was transitioning to water transport. As we admire this monochrome image from the early 20th century taken by Arthur Henry Kirk (not associated with the company), it is evident that craftsmanship and innovation were at their peak during those times. This print serves as a testament to both technological advancements in transportation history and the timeless allure of boating adventures on The Solent waters surrounding England's stunning countryside.
