Surveying Coastal Wetlands, 19th century. Creator: Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin
Surveying Coastal Wetlands, 19th century. One of 21 watercolors (out of an original 27) from an album relating to the history of the Siberian Cossacks held by the Rare Books Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow. The album was created as a gift for the future Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918, reigned 1895-1917), Most August Ataman of All Cossack Voiskos (Commander of all Cossack troops, a title bestowed by Nicholas I), and presented to him in the summer of 1891 on his return to Saint Petersburg through Siberia from a trip to the Russian Far East. The theme of the album is Cossack history east of the Ural Mountains, beginning with the victory of the Cossack hetman (or ataman) Ermak Timofeevich (died 1585) over Khan Kuchum in 1582 and continuing with subjects from more than three centuries of Russian history

Surveying Coastal Wetlands
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating watercolor painting by Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin, one of 21 masterpieces from an album in the Rare Books Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow. Created in the late 19th century, this artwork is a significant part of Russian history, presented as a gift to Tsar Nicholas II in 1891 during his journey from Siberia to Saint Petersburg. The painting portrays a group of Cossacks, the historic frontier warriors of Russia, meticulously surveying the coastal wetlands. The men, dressed in traditional Cossack attire, are intently focused on their task, using a variety of tools and boats to navigate the marshy terrain. In the background, a vast expanse of grasslands stretches out, dotted with wild animals such as birds and cats, adding to the untamed beauty of the scene. The artist, Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin, masterfully captures the essence of the frontier spirit, as the Cossacks explore and claim new territories for the Russian empire. The painting is a testament to the rich heritage of the Siberian Cossacks, whose history is chronicled in the album, which begins with the victory of Cossack hetman Ermak Timofeevich over Khan Kuchum in 1582 and continues through more than three centuries of Russian history. This stunning watercolor painting not only showcases the artistic prowess of Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin but also offers a glimpse into the past, providing valuable insights into the lives of the Cossacks and the exploration of the vast Siberian lands during the 19th century.
