Over London by Rail, 1872. Artist: Adolphe Francois Pannemaker

Over London by Rail, 1872. Men and women in the back yards of tenements in the East End of London, with a steam locomotive passing over a bridge in the background. These were typical 19th century London artisan terraced houses with washhouses, privies and yards leading on to an alley serving them and a similar terrace, all dominated by the railway viaducts superimposed on their neighbourhood. Taken from London: A Pilgrimage by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Dore. A Pilgrimage was a comprehensive portrait of London, but although the book was a commercial success many of the critics disliked it. Several were upset that Jerrold and Dore had concentrated on the poverty that existed in London

Over London by Rail, 1872 - A Glimpse into the Struggles of Victorian East End

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print, titled "Over London by Rail" offers a poignant snapshot of life in the bustling city during the 19th century. Created by Adolphe Francois Pannemaker, this wood engraving showcases the stark contrast between opulent railway viaducts and the cramped tenements that housed London's working class. In this scene, men and women can be seen toiling away in their backyards while a steam locomotive thunders over a bridge in the background. These terraced houses, typical of artisan dwellings at that time, are tightly packed with washhouses and privies leading onto an alleyway shared among neighbors. The architectural features seem almost cheek by jowl with each other as they coexist under the imposing presence of railway infrastructure. Taken from "London: A Pilgrimage" by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Dore, this print aimed to provide a comprehensive portrait of London but faced criticism for its focus on poverty. However uncomfortable it may have been for some critics, it serves as a powerful metaphor for social class divisions prevalent during that era. As we gaze upon this monochrome image today, we are transported back to an urban landscape where housing conditions were challenging yet resilient individuals persevered. This print is not just an artistic representation; it is a historical document capturing both architectural marvels and societal struggles within one frame.
