a captivating oil painting by the Italian Baroque artist Salvator Rosa, dates back to the seventeenth century. This masterpiece, currently housed in the Statens Museum for Kunst (National Gallery of Denmark), depicts the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus deep in contemplation, surrounded by the tranquility of the night. Clad in simple, worn apparel, Democritus sits cross-legged on a rocky outcropping, his gaze fixed on the horizon. He wears a long, flowing robe, held in place by a belt, and a simple tunic beneath. His feet are shod in sandals, the leather worn thin and frayed at the edges. In his left hand, he holds a bone, possibly a skull, while his right hand gestures in a thoughtful manner, as if imparting wisdom to an unseen audience.
