Mistletoe stem, LM
Mistletoe stem. Light micrograph (LM) of a mistletoe (Viscum album) stem in cross-section, showing nine vascular bundles radiating out from the centre of the stem. Each vascular bundle is composed of long fibres (dark crimson), phloem (green) and xylem (pink). The long fibres (sclerenchyma) give the stem support and allow flexibility. In-between, the phloem transports food and the xylem transports water and minerals. The green tissue (parenchyma) around the vascular bundles is for food storage and, when swollen with water, provides extra support. A close-up of one of the vascular bundles can be seen in B725/381

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of a mistletoe stem, captured under a light microscope. The cross-section reveals nine vascular bundles that radiate from the center of the stem, each playing a crucial role in supporting and nourishing this unique plant. The long fibres, depicted in dark crimson, provide essential support to the stem while allowing flexibility. Surrounding these fibers are layers of phloem (green) and xylem (pink), responsible for transporting food and water with minerals respectively. This dynamic system ensures the mistletoe's survival by delivering vital nutrients throughout its body. Intriguingly, the green tissue known as parenchyma serves as both food storage and an additional source of support when swollen with water. It is within this delicate balance of structures that we witness nature's ingenuity at work. As we zoom closer into one of these vascular bundles through another micrograph image provided, we gain even more insight into their complexity and functionality. Through this extraordinary visual exploration into mistletoe anatomy, we are reminded once again of the marvels found within our natural world. From its parasitic nature to its internal cellular makeup, this image encapsulates not only botanical beauty but also highlights how plants adapt to thrive in diverse environments.
