Eyelash mite, SEM
Eyelash mite. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an eyelash, or follicle, mite (Demodex folliculorum), a harmless parasite which lives inside human hair follicles. This mite infests hair follicles (depressions in the skin which contain the roots of hairs) around the eyelids, nose and in the ear canals of humans. It feeds on oily secretions from the skins sebaceous glands, which empty into the follicles, as well as dead skin cells. Infestation with follicle mites is usually symptomless; they cause no harm to their host. However, allergic reactions to the mites in susceptible individuals can cause hair loss and acne. Magnification: x293 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of an eyelash mite, providing a close-up view of this harmless parasite that resides within human hair follicles. The coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the delicate features and unique characteristics of Demodex folliculorum, commonly known as the eyelash mite. These minuscule creatures infest hair follicles around the eyelids, nose, and ear canals without causing any harm to their host. Feeding on oily secretions from sebaceous glands and dead skin cells, these mites lead a commensal lifestyle within our bodies. While most individuals remain symptomless due to their presence, some may experience allergic reactions leading to hair loss or acne. With a magnification level of x293 at 6x7cm size, this SEM image allows us to appreciate the complexity and beauty found in even the tiniest organisms. It serves as a reminder that our bodies are home to countless unseen inhabitants coexisting with us harmoniously. Through its scientific lens, this photograph not only highlights fascinating aspects of nature but also raises awareness about allergies and parasitic relationships in wildlife. As we delve into the microscopic world surrounding us, we gain a deeper understanding of our own existence and appreciation for the wonders that lie beyond what meets the eye.
