Eyelash mite tails, SEM

Eyelash mite tails. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tails (pink) of three eyelash, or follicle, mites (Demodex folliculorum), protruding from a human hair follicle. The hair shaft (upper right) is also seen. These harmless parasites infest follicles (depressions in the skin which contain the roots of hairs) around the eyelids, nose and in the ear canals of humans. One follicle may contain up to 25 growing mites. They feed on oily secretions from the skin's sebaceous glands, as well as dead skin cells. Infestation is usually symptomless, but, in some individuals, allergic reactions to the mites can cause hair loss and acne. Magnification: x250 at 6x7cm size

Gorgonian wrapper anemone (Nemanthus annamensis)

Gorgonian wrapper anemone (Nemanthus annamensis), on black coral whip. Usually seen attached to black coral trees and sea whips, gorgonian fans and other sessile benthic animals that have stalks or branches. Can also detach itself and wander through the water to find a new perch, hence its other name wandering anemone'. It is not known whether it actually kills the polyps of the animal it settles on or whether it settles on dead parts of the coral. Western Pacific Ocean

Common remora (Remora remora)

Common remora (Remora remora), attached to the dorsal surface of a Manta ray (Manta birostris). Its sucker disc is on top of the head. Remoras are opportunistic feeders, often gaining food scraps from their feeding host, but may take parasitic crustaceans from their host. It is likely however that the Manta rays do not appreciate their free riders. San Benedicto Island, Mexico
