EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1879, capturing a moment frozen in time on the sandy shores of St Ives, Cornwall. In the foreground stands the majestic Cardiff pilot cutter No12 Baratanach, proudly displaying her newly built glory. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are evident in every inch of this magnificent vessel. As we gaze into the background, our eyes are drawn to two topsail schooners named Drake and John Carnall, gracefully sailing through the calm waters. These vessels exude a sense of adventure and exploration that was characteristic of seafaring life during that era. Completing this picturesque scene is a fishing lugger known as S. S. 619, adding an element of livelihood and industry to this coastal landscape. Its presence reminds us of the importance of fishing communities in sustaining local economies. The photographer behind this remarkable image is Edward Ashton, who skillfully captures not only these impressive ships but also showcases the hardworking men who played vital roles in shipbuilding along Cornwall's coast.
