EDITORS COMMENTS
Step into the vibrant and bustling world of the Jerusalem bazaar, as depicted in this exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving from the 1800s. The entrance to the bazaar, also known as the besestein or market, is shown here with an intricately designed archway, adorned with Arabic script and ornate geometric patterns. The sealed reservoir and fountain at the entrance are a common feature in Middle Eastern markets, providing both practical and symbolic functions. This illustration, created by Corsi after Giulio Ferrario, is taken from Ferrario's Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World, published in Florence in 1833. It is a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and daily life of the Holy Land during the Ottoman Empire. The market of Jerusalem was a hub of activity, where merchants from all over the region would gather to sell their wares, from textiles and spices to ceramics and metalwork. The engraving is based on an earlier work by Luigi Mayer, who traveled extensively through Egypt, Palestine, and other parts of the Ottoman Empire in the early 1800s. His views of the Holy Land were widely circulated and influenced European perceptions of the region for generations to come. This image of the Jerusalem bazaar is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Middle East and the enduring allure of its markets and bazaars.
