Field-Marshal Lord French (1852-1925) inspecting some 10, 000 volunteers of numerous London regiments in Hyde Park in 1916. Lord French had fought in both the Sudanese and Boer wars of the previous century and took command of the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1914. Lord French, as he was then known, had a distinguished military career that spanned over half a century, having fought in the Sudanese War of 1896 and the Second Boer War of 1899-1902. He took command of the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1914 and became Commander-in-Chief of the home forces in 1915. After the war, he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
