Lord French, as he was then known, had a distinguished military career that spanned over half a century, having fought in the Sudanese War of 1896 and the Second Boer War of 1899-1902. He took command of the British Expeditionary Force in France in 1914 and became Commander-in-Chief of the home forces in 1915. After the war, he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
