EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures a pivotal moment in the political development of Australia, as representatives from the six separate British self-governing colonies of New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia gathered in Melbourne for the Federation Conference in 1890. The aim of the meeting was to discuss the formation of a federation, which would unite the colonies into a single political entity under the British Crown. Prominently featured in the image are Sir John Hall, the Governor of Victoria; Captain Russell, a naval officer; Sir Henry Parkes, the "Father of Federation" and Premier of New South Wales; Mr McMillan, a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly; Dr Cockburn, a South Australian politician; Mr Thomas Playford, a South Australian delegate; Mr A. Deakin, the future Prime Minister of Australia; Mr G. H. Jenkins, a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly; and Mr Duncan Gillies, a Victorian delegate. The meeting, which took place on August 27, 1890, was a significant step towards the realization of the dream of a united Australia. The delegates worked tirelessly to draft a constitution and establish the framework for the new federation, which would be officially established on January 1, 1901. This photograph serves as a powerful reminder of the political vision and determination of the men who shaped the future of Australia.
