Phoenicura Rubeculoides, Phoenicura Coeruleocephala. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains
Phoenicura Rubeculoides, Phoenicura Coeruleocephala. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of Phoenicura Rubeculoides and Phoenicura Coeruleocephala, two bird species found in the majestic Himalaya Mountains. Engraved in 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, this artwork is a testament to their remarkable talent and passion for ornithology. John Gould, also known as the "bird-stuffer" initially worked as a taxidermist for the Zoological Society. However, his fascination with birds from the east grew when a collection of avian specimens from the Himalayas arrived at the society's museum in the late 1820s. Inspired by these magnificent creatures, he conceived an ambitious project - publishing a volume of imperial folio-sized hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty species and figures of one hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould played an instrumental role in bringing these illustrations to life. She meticulously made drawings of each bird before transferring them onto large lithographic stones. The resulting prints, now famously referred to as "Gould plates" are truly awe-inspiring. In this particular image, we can admire every intricate detail - from the exotic plumage to their distinct tails. The vibrant colors beautifully capture their natural allure while showcasing Elizabeth's exceptional artistic skills. Dating back to the early 19th century, this illustration holds immense historical significance within both British and European art communities. Its inclusion in books and manuscripts further solidifies its importance as a valuable piece of natural history documentation. The Liszt Cultural Institute proudly presents this close-up view into nature's wonders through Quint Lox's lens – allowing us all to appreciate these extraordinary Asian birds that grace our world high up in the Himalayan peaks.
