Noctua Cuculoides. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould

Garrulus Leucolophus, White-crested Laughingthrush. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

Noctua Cuculoides - A Glimpse into the Enchanting Himalayan Avian World

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases a remarkable engraving from 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould, titled "Noctua Cuculoides". The image depicts one of the many exquisite bird species found in the majestic Himalaya Mountains. Known as the White-crested Laughingthrush or Garrulus Leucolophus, this avian beauty is truly a sight to behold. John Gould, renowned for his taxidermy skills and nicknamed the "bird-stuffer" developed an intense fascination with Eastern birds during his time at the Zoological Society. His passion ignited when he encountered a collection of avifauna from the Himalayas in the late 1820s. Inspired by these magnificent creatures, he conceived an ambitious project – publishing hand-colored lithographs featuring eighty different species and depicting a hundred individual birds. Elizabeth Gould played an instrumental role in bringing these visions to life. She meticulously crafted intricate drawings that were then transferred onto large lithographic stones known as "Gould plates". Her artistic talent beautifully captured every detail of Noctua Cuculoides' exotic plumage and elegant tail feathers. This enchanting illustration transports us back to early 19th-century natural history exploration. Its vibrant colors and meticulous details offer us a glimpse into both Elizabeth's artistic prowess and John's dedication to documenting these extraordinary creatures. As we admire this close-up view of Noctua Cuculoides, we are reminded of nature's boundless wonders found within Asia's breathtaking landscapes – specifically, its awe-inspiring Himalayan region.
