EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent Roman statue of Asclepius, the revered deity of Greek medicine. Dating back to the 6th century BC, this ancient cult figure holds immense historical and cultural significance. Crafted from marble with exquisite attention to detail, the statue depicts Asclepius holding a staff around which a serpent gracefully twines—a symbol that has endured through time as an emblem of medical practice. Legend has it that Asclepius acquired his extensive knowledge in surgery and pharmacology from Chiron, the wise centaur. However, his healing abilities became so potent that Hades, the realm of the dead, began losing inhabitants due to their restored health. In response to complaints from Hades' population decline, Zeus struck down Asclepius with a thunderbolt. Displayed proudly at the Archaeological Museum of Naples in Italy, this sculpture is not only an artistic marvel but also serves as a testament to ancient mythology and its influence on medical practices today. The intricate carvings bring forth images of classical antiquity while evoking awe for both its mythical origins and historical context. As you gaze upon this remarkable artwork captured by Science Photo Library's lens, let your imagination wander into an era where gods walked among mortals and divine intervention shaped human existence. This photograph encapsulates centuries-old beliefs intertwined with artistry—a true masterpiece celebrating culture and history alike.
