The division, or bifurcation, of the aorta into the left & right iliac arteries appears as an inverted Y. The patient was suffering from extensive peripheral arterial disease lower down his left leg (at right here), but these lesions are not visible in this image. Abdominal angiography is an X-ray technique in which the arteries are outlined by radio-opaque contrast medium, introduced through a catheter inserted via the femoral artery.
